Government forces attack IDPs trying to deliver medicine to Rukban camp

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Several individuals were injured on Sunday at the Rukban camp, located at the border triangle of Syria, Iraq, and Jordan, when the Syrian government forces opened fire on them while they attempted to deliver essential food and medicine.

The Syrian Free Army, an armed faction operating in the al-Tanf region and supported by the U.S.-led Global Coalition, stated that displaced individuals were injured while trying to bring in vital supplies after being directly targeted by the government forces.

The Rukban camp, home to approximately 8,000 IDPs, has faced a harsh siege since 2018, with the government forces preventing access for international organizations under the pretext of security concerns.

Many fled the camp due to the harsh conditions, despite the severe risks in government-controlled areas in Syria.

The United States provided weapons and financial support to men from Rukban, leading to the creation of the Syrian Free Army, which was previously known as the Commandos of the Revolutionaries.

Additionally, the U.S. maintains a military presence at al-Tanf base near the camp and maintains de facto control over a 55-kilometer zone surrounding the base and Rukban camp.

These individuals were trying to provide children in the camp with necessary medications and baby milk, according to the statement.

Moreover, it noted they were injured in the attack as landmines in the vicinity of the camp detonated. The government forces also destroyed the vehicles used by these individuals.
