Germany arrests Syrian man plotting to kill soldiers with machetes

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – German authorities stated on Friday that they arrested a 27-year-old Syrian man suspected of planning to kill soldiers using two machetes in Munich in southern Germany.

The public prosecutor’s office in Munich said in a statement the arrested man is believed to support radical Islamic ideology.

The accused acquired two machetes that were about 40 cm in length. He intended to attack soldiers in the town of Hof, Bavaria, during their lunch break, aiming to kill as many as he could, according to the statement.

“With the act, the accused wanted to attract attention and create a feeling of uncertainty among the population,” the statement said.

The suspect was presented to a judge on Friday after being arrested the previous day, the prosecutor’s office added.

The attack came following a mass stabbing in Solingen in August when a 26-year-old Syrian suspect killed three people and wounded eight others. Later, the Islamic State group (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack.
