2 Somali men arrested in U.S. plead guilty to planning to fight for ISIS
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United States Attorney’s Office in the District of Arizona stated on Wednesday that two Somali men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to provide support to the Islamic State (ISIS).
The statement added that Ahmed Mahad Mohamed, 26, and Abdi Yemeni Hussein, 25, were arrested at Tucson airport as part of an FBI operation five years ago.
The statement noted that Mohamed’s main aspiration was to go to Syria to join ISIS and participate in jihad.
Starting in August 2018, Mohamed sought out online connections with other supporters of ISIS. He expressed a desire to travel to areas controlled by ISIS to become a “beheading guy” and to die as a martyr.
In 2019, he met with Hussein to discuss their plans. Mohamed confirmed that his intention was to fight for ISIS.
They are scheduled to be sentenced on October 11, 2024 and could face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
