Amnesty calls on AANES to release Iraqi prisoners

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Amnesty International on Tuesday called on the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) to release Iraqi individuals in its prisons.

The organization called for the AANES to expand the amnesty law it had granted to include the Iraqis prisoners.

This came following a general amnesty granted by the AANES on July 17, for offenses related to terrorism.

By the amnesty law, the AANES released a number of Syrian prisoners in the cities of Qamishli, Hasakah and Manbij. It is scheduled that about 1,500 prisoners will be released by the law.

The Amnesty International urged the United Nations to coordinate with the AANES and the U.S.-led Global Coalition to investigate and prosecute the individuals who committed crimes under domestic and international laws.

It also called for releasing “children and victims of trafficking.”  

There are about 28.725 Iraqi individuals in Hawl Camp in Northeast Syria.
