Syria, Russia to renovate war-damaged historical landmark

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Russia and the Syrian government agreed on Monday to renovate a historical landmark in the Syrian Desert that was damaged by the war.

Syrian Minister of Culture, Lubana Mshaweh, and Russian Ambassador to Damascus, Alexander Efimov, met and discussed the process of re-building the Arch of Triumph in the city of Palmyra, Syria’s state-run news agency SANA reported.

The 1,800-year-old Arch of Triumph in Palmyra, Syria’s Desert, was destroyed by the Islamic State (ISIS) militants in 2015. It was one of the most recognizable sites in Palmyra.

ISIS took control over the city of Palmyra in 2015, and destroyed the Arch of Triumph in October of the same year.
