Residents protest against appointing Turkish governor in Aleppo
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – Dozens of residents in a town held by the opposition in Aleppo Governorate in northwest Syria protested on Sunday against the appointment of a Turkish governor to head their local council.
Residents of the town of Akhtarin, north of Aleppo, that is under the control of the Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), took to the streets to express their rejection regarding the imposition of Turkey’s governor of Kilis as the head of the town’s local council.
An exclusive source from the town told North Press that dozens of people gathered in front of the local council building and showed their rejection for the appointment of the governor of Turkey’s southern city of Kilis without any elections.
The source said the protesters demanded the cancellation of the new appointments and the holding of fair elections to re-elect the head of the local council and its members.
Akhtarin is a town located in Azaz region and contains more than 84 villages. It has been under the Turkish occupation and the control of the SNA factions since 2012.
Since its occupation of areas in northern Syria, Turkey has applied policies of Turkification through opening institutes to teach Turkish language like Yunus Emre Cultural Institute or appointing officials of Turkish nationality to implement its policies.
