Turkey’s Erdogan visits Iraq to discuss security, water, economic issues

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is scheduled to visit Iraq on Monday, marking his first visit in 13 years, to discuss security, water, economic issues.

Erdogan is scheduled to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani and President Abdul Latif Rashid in Baghdad on Monday.

Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, revealed that Turkey will sign agreements with Iraq in various sectors, including security, energy, agriculture, water, health, and education.

Following these meetings, Erdogan will then travel to Erbil in Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

Yaşar Güler, Turkish Minister of National Defense, stated that Turkey and Iraq may sign a strategic agreement during the visit, without revealing further details.

Al-Sudani welcomed the visit and highlighted that both countries aim to find solutions to their shared challenges.

In his previous remarks ahead of the visit, Erdogan said Turkey is currently reviewing requests presented by Iraq regarding water-related issues.

He emphasized their commitment to finding a resolution to this problem in collaboration with Iraq.

Talks between Erdogan and Iraqi officials are also expected to focus on energy cooperation as well as the possible resumption of oil flow through a pipeline to Turkey.
