Residents of Syria’s Suwayda commemorate death of Druze nationalist

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Residents of Suwayda Governorate in southern Syria commemorated on Tuesday the death of Sultan al-Atrash, a Druze nationalist and leader of the Great Syrian Revolution, amid ongoing anti-government protests that have been taking place for several months.

A local source informed North Press that dozens of residents from the city of Suwayda and its countryside gathered in al-Karama Square in the city center and renewed their demands regarding overthrowing the “Syrian regime”, peaceful transfer of power, implementation of international resolutions, and the release of the detainees.

The source said the protesters then headed towards the town of al-Qrayya in the southern countryside of Suwayda to participate in commemorating the death of Sultan al-Atrash, leader of the Great Syrian Revolution.

Saleh Nabwani, a political activist from Suwayda, told North Press that the protests are ongoing, adding that they will continue until they build a new state, a state of citizenship, and Syria is for all Syrians.

Jamal al-Shofi, a local activist from Suwayda, told North Press that Sultan al-Atrash and his supporters were open to all Syrians and wanted a state for all Syrians.

For several months, demonstrations have been continuing in al-Karama Square in the city center of Suwayda, reaffirming the persistence of the movement and demanding the overthrow of the “regime”, implementation of international resolutions, and the release of detainees.
