Over 1,000 women, children killed, injured in Syria in 2023
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press reported the killing of 238 women and the injury of 342 others at least as a result of war in Syria during 2023.
The annual report indicated the killing of 273 children and the injury of 523 others in 2023.
Physical and sexual violence, as well as underage marriage, have become more prevalent in areas controlled by the Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka the Syrian National Army (SNA), and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front) compared to other regions.
At the beginning of 2023, Human Rights Watch Organization (HRW) mentioned in its annual report that Syrian women still face discrimination regarding marriage, divorce, child custody, and inheritance under the Personal Status Law.
The report mentioned that 186 children were killed and 383 others were injured due to the repercussions of war and indiscriminate shelling between conflicting parties, with some suffering permanent disabilities.
The report highlighted that these children lack sufficient financial and psychological support, noting that a lot of Syrian children have left school to work and support their families.
On May 17, 2023, Save the Children Organization stated that child stunting levels in Syria could amount to unprecedented levels, with 600,000 children already affected due to malnutrition and growing hunger among Syrians in general.
The report also documented the presence of 7,000 stateless children in camps in northeastern Syria.
