Turkey bombs 930 sites in NE Syria, causes 368 casualties in 2023
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Turkish forces have targeted 930 sites in Northeast Syria since the beginning of 2023, resulting in civilian casualties as the majority of targeted sites are residential areas.
The Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press recorded 930 attacks launched by Turkish forces against 711 residential areas, 53 infrastructure sites, 52 sites of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and 65 sites of the Syrian government forces.
Turkish strikes also targeted 21 agricultural sites, 24 industrial facilities, and four healthcare centers, which means that 78 percent of the targeted sites were residential.
The targeted infrastructure includes service, healthcare, oil, and energy facilities, which have been the focus of Turkish attacks on areas in northeastern Syria. The attacks deprived millions of people of these services amid difficult living conditions in the region.
The most frequently targeted areas are distributed as follows: 379 sites in the northern countryside of Aleppo, 141 sites in the town of Ain Issa, 93 sites in the town of Tel Tamr, 91 sites in the city of Qamishli, 53 sites in Hasakah, 62 sites in the city of Manbij, 57 sites in Kobani, 19 sites in Derik, and 35 sites in the countryside of Raqqa.
The Turkish forces have indiscriminately targeted the civilian population in the area from time to time. The latest attacks occurred on Dec. 23, and targeted several cities and villages, resulting in the killing of a number of civilians, in addition to extensive damage to the targeted areas.
The number of casualties amounted to 368, including 176 civilians. The Turkish strikes killed nine women and five children aged between two and 12, and injured 23 women and 18 children aged between three and 17.
