Iran to respond to attacks on forces in Syria – Iran’s FM
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said on Sunday that his country will respond firmly to any attacks against its forces in Syria. This came in an interview with the Financial Times.
Abdollahian pointed out that no Iranian forces present in Syria have been injured so far, stressing that “if that happens, the response will be harsh.”
The Iranian minister said that Hezbollah in Lebanon, Ansarullah in Yemen, and the Islamic Resistance in Iraq are resistance movements in the region against the Zionist occupation, pointing to their “independent identity,” and that they do not receive orders from Iran, but have “good relations with it”.
Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary, Sabrina Singh said on Nov. 17 that the US responds to attacks against the US troops in Syria. “If there are more attacks, we will certainly respond at a time and place of our choosing,” according to Singh.
The US forces have recently launched retaliatory airstrikes on sites linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated Iranian-backed militias in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria. The action comes after their bases were targeted by drones.
The escalation by the Iranian-backed militias against US troops in Syria and Iraq has come since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict on Oct. 7, following a surprise attack by Hamas.
