Iraq prepares to repatriate families from Syria’s Hawl Camp
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – The Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement announced, on Wednesday, making preparations to receive a new batch of Iraqi families from the Hawl Camp in Hasakah Governorate, northeastern Syria.
Spokesperson of the Ministry, Ali Abbas Jahangir, told North Press that the process of repatriating families from the camp is ongoing. However, temporary delays may occur due to logistic issues.
He did not disclose the exact number of families to be repatriated in the upcoming batch. “I believe the number ranges between 150 to 180 families,” Jahangir said.
On Tuesday, local media reported citing Sherwan Dubardani, member of the Iraqi Parliament, as saying that the administration of the Hawl Camp intends to relocate over 100 Iraqi families included in the twelfth batch to al-Jadaa camp in Nineveh Governorate in northern Iraq after completing the necessary procedures by the Iraqi authorities.
The Hawl Camp currently houses approximately 55,000 individuals, including 2,423 Islamic State (ISIS) families that came from around 60 countries.
A source within the camp informed North Press that they have taken security measures and began preparations for the repatriation.
The source further added that more than 100 families will be relocated early next week.
This batch will add to a total of 6,500 individuals who have been repatriated from the Hawl Camp in 11 batches since the Iraqi government’s decision to repatriate its citizens over two years ago, according to Jahangir.
