Girl killed in armed attack on SDF in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) –  A girl was killed and three others were injured on Sunday in an attack by unknown gunmen on a checkpoint belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) at the entrance of the town of Abu Hamam, eastern Deir ez-Zor Governorate, eastern Syria.

There has been a recent increase in attacks targeting SDF positions in Deir ez-Zor, primarily perpetrated by cells of the Islamic State (ISIS) and militants from Iranian-backed militias. The latter have also launched many drone and rocket attacks on US bases in the region following the Israel-Hamas conflict which started on October 7.

A local source from the town of Abu Hamam, located approximately 85 kilometers east of the city of Deir ez-Zor, told North Press that “unknown gunmen targeted the Sanour checkpoint of the SDF with a rocket and machine guns at the entrance of Abu Hamam.”

He added that 4-year-old girl named Asmaa al-Othman lost her life after being hit by a bullet fired by the unknown gunmen when they fired indiscriminate shots towards the houses of the town’s residents during their withdrawal. Furthermore, three other individuals were injured and subsequently transported to a hospital.

The source noted that the SDF sealed off the area following the incident and has initiated operations in search for the perpetrators.
