Arab League, US officials meet to tackle Syrian issue
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Arab League’s Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit met on Wednesday US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington at the State Department for a “strategic dialogue” over how to deal with Syria’s “regime”.
Before the meeting, Gheit said the Arab League was working to “deepen the relationship” with the US, according to The National.
Blinken told Gheit that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “did not merit readmission to the Arab League”, a State Department official told The Nationalfollowing the meeting.
Discussions touched on shaping Arab state engagements with the Syrian “regime”, the official added.
Blinken emphasized that Washington hopes the Arab bloc presses al-Assad to expand humanitarian access, resume a political process, release detainees and counter captagon trafficking.
Dialogue with the League was evidence of the “possibilities and potential for strengthening and deepening collaboration”. the US official added.
