Government forces push military reinforcements to Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian government forces pushed on Monday military reinforcements to the western countryside of Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, amid news about a potential military operation in the region.
A local source told North Press that the government forces had sent military reinforcements including heavy machinery that was located in the building of Abu Na’im Press that it takes as a military headquarters near the town of Tafas, in the western countryside of Daraa.
The heavy machinery was accompanied by dozens of soldiers, as most of them were deployed in the military posts in the towns of Tafas and al-Yadoudah, western Daraa, the source added.
Advancing the reinforcements to the region came in tandem with news about the government intention to launch a military operation on the towns of the region under the pretext of the existence of militants who work for Islamic State (ISIS), according to the source.
Residents of Daraa told North Press that the government talks about a military campaign every year at this time which is harvest time in order to terrify farmers and get sums to stop the campaign.
In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and Syrian the government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those who opposed the agreement they were sent to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS – formerly al-Nusra Front).
On May 16, the government forces started a new process of settlement in Daraa for the wanted people who are forced to surrender to the government’s security apparatuses to have their status settled. Otherwise, they must leave their hometown.
