Saudi Arabia reactivates work of its diplomatic mission in Syria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia said it resumed the work of its diplomatic mission in Syria after more than a decade of suspension in the wake of the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War in 2011.

On Sunday, Arab foreign ministers agreed, in a meeting in Cairo, on readmitting Syria into the Arab League, after more than a decade of suspension.

To strengthen joint Arab action and security and stability in the region, “Saudi Arabia has decided to resume the work of its diplomatic mission in Syria,” the Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement.

On April 18, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad met with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Damascus where they discussed ending Syria’s isolation and finding a political solution for the Syrian crisis.

The foreign minister’s visit was the first since severing ties in 2011, after Saudi Arabia backed the Syrian opposition that tried to overthrow al-Assad.
