DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, said on Tuesday that the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “won the war” in Syria and stressed that Iran will not join the Arab League.
Aboul Gheit said, in a meeting on the Lebanese TV channel al-Jadeed, that the Arab League rushed in freezing Syria’s membership, as it had to provide more chances for negotiations.
He stressed that al-Assad could win the war when he settled the situation militarily five years ago, as the opposition could not enter Damascus at the time.
He emphasized that he will meet al-Assad once he readmitted to the Arab League.
In addition, he stressed that Iran is not be allowed to be in the Arab League.
Countries such as Turkey and Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman try to normalize ties with Syria, “despite widespread and systematic human rights abuses,” according to Human Rights Watch (HRW).
On April 18, al-Assad received Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan at the People’s Palace, where they discussed the bilateral ties between the two countries and other political international and regional files.
