Syria’s Foreign Minister heads to Tunisia, Iraq after Algeria

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – SyrianMinister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Mekdad will arrive in Tunisia on Monday on an official visit on the invitation by his Tunisian counterpart, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia said on Sunday.

On Saturday, Mekdad arrived in Algeria on an officialthree-day visit within his tour to Arab countries including Tunisia and Iraq.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tunisia added on its official website on Facebook, on an invitation by Minister of Foreign Affairs in February, Nabil Ammar, Syria’s Mekdad will pay “a working visit” to Tunisia that will last from April 17 to 19.

The visit comes in the framework of keenness to restore bilateral relations following the appointing of new Tunisian ambassador in Syria and the Syrian government decision to reopen its embassy in Tunisia and appointing an ambassador.  

On April 12, in a Syrian-Tunisian joint statement, the Syrian government said in response to Tunisian President Kais Saied’s initiative to appoint an ambassador for his country in Damascus, Syria decided to reopen its embassy in Tunisia and appoint an ambassador for it.

The pro-government Watan newspaper said that Mekdad will discuss developments of conditions in Syria and Arab stances regarding Syria’s readmission to the Arab League.

Syria was expelled from the Arab League in 2011 over the government’s brutal crackdown against protestors.

Additionally, the Syrian foreign minister will discuss ways to boost bilateral relations with the three Arab countries.
