AANES condemns “Turkish” attack on Sulaymaniyah Airport
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) condemned, on Saturday, a suspected Turkish attack on Sulaymaniyah International Airport and said Turkey “aims to create chaos through its interventions and violation of the sovereignty of the neighboring countries.”
AANES’s statement was made following the attack on Sulaymaniyah International Airport in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), which reportedly did not cause any deaths or injuries.
The statement condemned Turkish interventions that aim to create chaos and unrest, which coincide with the upcoming Turkish elections.
The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the SDF defeated ISIS militarily there.
The statement described the incident as “an aggression” on the sovereignty of Iraq and that “Turkey is unleashing its hand in Iraq and the Kurdistan region under flimsy arguments and pretexts.”
The AANES stressed its solidarity with the government of Sulaymaniyah and called for the “aggression” to be countered with clear positions by all parties in Iraq and the KRI.
Earlier today, the commander in chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, condemned the attack on the airport, noting that the “patriotic and humanitarian” stance of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) party in supporting its “brethren in Syria” annoy Turkey.
