SDF commander condemns attack on KRI’s Sulaymaniyah Airport

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Commander in Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, condemned on Saturday the attack on Sulaymaniyah International Airport that Turkey is suspected of having carried out on Friday, noting that the “patriotic and humanitarian” stances of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) party annoy Turkey.

Abdi said on Twitter, “We strongly condemn the attack on Sulaymaniyah Airport by Turkey. These violations continue in Iraq and Syria and have serious repercussions on the entire region.”

Abdi noted that the PUK’s support for their “brethren in Syria” annoys Turkey, stressing the continuation of “our principled relations with our brothers and allies in Sulaymaniyah, and we stand as one against these violations.”

News circulated on social media on Friday about an assassination attempt on the SDF commander in the recent attack on the Sulaymaniyah Airport, which was denied in a statement by the SDF.

On Friday, Gianni Vernetti, an Italian lawyer and politician, said he discussed the political situation in Syria and in the Middle East in a meeting with Mazloum Abdi.

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) commented on the incident in a statement, saying that three US military personnel were in the targeted convoy in Sulaymaniyah and sustained no injuries.

The statement did not attribute the attack to Turkey.

At the end of 2022, Abdi met with the president of the PUK party, Bafel Talabani, and Matthew McFarlane, the commanding general of the Global Coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, at his residence in Hasakah, northern Syria.
