UAE to construct houses for quake-affected people in Syria’s Latakia
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Governorate of Latakia, on Syria’s coast, announced on Thursday that, in coordination with the Red Crescent Society of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it will construct pre-fabricated housing units in seven areas in the governorate for people affected by earthquakes.
The project will include about 1,000 housing units in addition to service facilities.
On Feb. 6, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey and Syria, killing hundreds in both countries and causing wide destruction and displacement of thousands of people.
The head of Emirates Red Crescent delegation Muhamad al-Ka’bi, said that the point of providing such housing unites is to reduce the numbers of people in shelters.
350 unites will be built in the site of al-Gharaf, as each unit can shelter six people. In addition, they will be provided with solar panels, al-Ka’bi added.
In turn, Chargé d’Affaires of the UAE Embassy in Damascus, Abdulhakim al-Nuaimi, said that the project represents the UAE’s support for the Syrian people.
On April 2, a ship carrying more than 2,000 tons of humanitarian aid arrived in Latakia, coming from the Red Crescent Society of the UAE.
