EU grants €60 million for people in need in Lebanon, including Syrians
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič announced on Thursday €60 million for the most vulnerable people in Lebanon, including Syrian refugees.
The Commissioner is on a visit to Lebanon to meet humanitarian partners on the ground as well as the Lebanese authorities.
The European Commissioner estimated, in a press release, that four million people in Lebanon need humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs.
“All EU humanitarian assistance is provided based on needs, regardless of status or nationality,” according to the commissioner.
The new funding brings EU humanitarian funding for Lebanon since 2011 to almost €860 million.
A political and economic crisis is overwhelming Lebanon, resulting in widespread poverty, collapsing public services and growing community tensions.
About four million people, including 1.5 million Syrian refugees and 2.2 million vulnerable Lebanese, need humanitarian assistance.
Syrian refugee families who live in informal settlements and collective shelters go through severe and substandard conditions in Lebanon.
In Dec. 2022, UN agencies called for [y1] providing permanent support for Syrian refugees in Lebanon, in light of miserable living conditions in the country.
