Earthquake’s death toll surpasses 3.587 in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The death toll in Syria after the deadly earthquake that struck on Feb. 6 following another strong one in Turkey surpassed 3.587 by Sunday.
However, more than 5.356 injuries were recorded in all Syrian regions seven days after the catastrophic earthquake.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing thousands and injuring many more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
The figures were released on Saturday by the Syrian Ministry of Health and the Civil Defense in the opposition-held areas in northwest of the country.
The Syrian Ministry of Health announced that the number of fatalities has reached to 1.414 deaths and 2.349 injuries in the government-held areas.
The Civil Defense, affiliated with the Syrian opposition, in Idlib announced 2.167 deaths and 2.950 injuries in northwest Syria.
The number of the buildings that were completely destroyed by the earthquake have reached 550 ones, while those partially damaged have reached more than 1.570 ones in all Syrian areas that were struck by the earthquake.
In the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) areas, the death toll has remained static even though the region felt mild aftershocks following the initial devastating earthquakes.
The Health Board affiliated with the AANES has counted six dead people and 57 injured ones.
On Feb. 10, the Syrian government has declared the areas worst affected by Feb. 6 deadly earthquakes – Latakia, Hama, Aleppo and Idlib – as “disaster zones” and will set up a fund for their reconstruction.
