Rescue Operations Continue in Syria’s Latakia
LATAKIA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Civil Defense Forces in collaboration with the Lebanese Red Cross and a team of Lebanese volunteers continue to look for survivors under buildings that collapsed due to the devastating earthquake that hit Syria, including the Latakia Governorate, on the Syrian coast, on Monday.
On Friday, the rescue teams were able to save a 60-year-old woman alongside her 23-year-old son from under rubble in the city of Jableh, in the countryside of Latakia.
The search operations for survivors in the building came to end after saving the old woman and her son, while operations in other buildings are still continuing, according to local sources.
Search operations for survivors in almost all areas in Latakia came to an end, except for those in the Southern Ramel neighborhood, which will end its rescue operations soon.
A source from the Civil Defense Forces of the government told North Press, “It is difficult to find anyone alive under the rubble in Ramel neighborhood, especially because it has been five days since the earthquake.”
Social media users criticized the slow pace of the government’s response to the earthquake in Latakia, as well as the fact that the area did not get enough media attention by the Syrian government.
Latakia has not yet announced the final toll of the victims of the earthquake.
Several buildings that at risk of collapse, especially in Jableh, have been evacuated.
