SDF arrests former leader of ISIS in Syria’s Raqqa

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Wednesday the arrest of a leader of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) in the countryside of Raqqa, north Syria.

The SDF Media Center, in a statement,  said Special Forces of the SDF, with aerial surveillance  by the US-led  Global Coalition to defeat ISIS, carried out a security operation, targeting an ISIS leader.

The operation, which was carried out in Hutin Farm north of Raqqa, resulted in the arrest of the leader.

The arrested former ISIS leader was in charge of the so-called “Bayt al-mal” (the house of money)[financial institution responsible for the administration of taxes in ISIS] in Deir ez-Zor, east Syria, before he fled due to the SDF campaign in 2019, the statement read.

The arrested leader has links with ISIS sleeper and active cells in the region, the statement added.

Earlier on the same day, the SDF announced the arrest of three members of ISIS in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor in the “Al-Jazeera Thunderbolt” Operation.

On Jan. 3, the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) arrested two ISIS agents with links to perpetrators of the recent attack on the Asayish headquarters in Raqqa, north Syria, in December 2022.

The SDF and Asayish forces, supported by the global coalition, have recently intensified the operations against ISIS sleeper cells across northeast Syria and launched in December 2022 the “Al-Jazeera Thunderbolt” Operation in the eastern countryside of Hasakah, northeast Syria, against ISIS which is continuing.
