SDF sweeps Syrian-Iraqi bordering area pursuing ISIS cells

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Tuesday they swept the bordering area with Iraq on the sixth day of “al- Jazeera Thunderbolt” Operation against the sleeper cells of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS).

The “al-Jazeera Thunderbolt” Operation was launched on Dec. 29, 2022, by the SDF, with the participation of the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish), and in coordination with the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS in the areas of Hawl and Tel Hamis in Hasakah and Qamishli countryside.

The Media Center of the SDF said in a statement that joint forces of the Asayish and the Coalition swept an area of 63 km in the arid area east of Hawl Camp.

The statement added “three suspects who were, according to initial information, linked to ISIS terrorist cells were arrested. The arrestees were referred to investigation to inspect their true identities.”

The forces also arrested four people involved in various “criminal acts against the local populace,” in the southern and eastern countryside of the city of Hasakah.

With aerial and ground support by the Coalition, the SDF Special Units raided the town of Markada, south of Hasakah, through which two members of an ISIS cell were arrested and a quantity of equipment and arms were seized, the statement noted.

Thus, the overall toll of ISIS members arrested during the “al-Jazeera Thunderbolt” Operation has reached 152, according to SDF figures.
