80.000 Syrians consider Jordan’s Zaatari camp home – UNHCR

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Monday that there are more than 80.000 Syrian refugees who consider Zaatari camp, in Jordan, their home, as the vast majority of them cannot return home in the near future.

This came in a report by UNHCR, in which it said that there are 100 million refugees around the world, mainly from Ukraine, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Syria, and Myanmar, who fled either conflict, violence, human rights violations or persecution.

Regarding the Syrian refugees in Jordan, Dominik Bartsch, UNHCR Representative in Jordan, said in July “Prospects for return for the time being do not look promising,” as the current situation in Syria is not suitable.

In addition, the report noted that there are about five million children, who were born in Syria, “have never known the country at peace.”

According to the UNHCR statistics, Jordan hosts approximately 675.000 registered refugees from Syria, as most of them live among local communities, while 17 percent of them live in the two main refugee camps, Zaatari and Azraq.

The Jordanian government previously said that there are 1.3 million Syrian refugees living on its soil.

About 3.325 Syrian refugees have returned to their homeland from Jordan during 2022, according to a statistic provided by state-run al-Mamlaka TV broadcasted on Oct. 20.

On Dec. 18, UN agencies called for providing permanent support for vulnerable people, especially Syrian refugees in Lebanon, in light of the miserable living conditions they live in.
