Russia works to host meeting between Erdogan, Assad
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Russia is working hard to host a meeting between Syrian president and his Turkish counterpart in an attempt to revive ties between the two countries, Russian Special Presidential Envoy for Syria Alexander Lavrentyev said on Friday.
Lavrentyev, in an interview with Al Arabiya, said his country supported such a meeting between the two leaders.
He added, “I reiterate that Turkey should consider this and we insist that such a meeting could be positive and useful overall and we are working toward that.”
He went further noting communication between the two depended on their wishes, “it is the willingness to meet each other halfway that matters the most.”
For the first time and on the margins of 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Turkish Pressident Recep Tayyip Erdogna shook hand with his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Erdogan noted to the possibility of normalizing ties with Syria.
On November 23, the Russian official said regarding prospects that Turkey and Syria reach a rapprochement, “That is just vital, because those two countries are neighbors and they should be friends.”
