US urges Turkey to halt attacks against northern Syria – US official
WASHINGTON, USA (North Press) – The US has conveyed to Turkey its “serious concerns” regarding the recent uptick in military escalation in northern Syria and urged Ankara to halt its operations, a US State Department spokesperson said Tuesday in an exclusive statement to North Press.
“We have consistently communicated our serious concerns to Turkey, in public and private. … We have urged Turkey against such operations, just as we have urged our Syrian partners against attacks or escalation,” the statement said.
The spokesperson told North Press that the recent operations could undermine the campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) and put civilians’ lives at risk.
The statement added, “We continue to oppose any military action that destabilizes the situation in Syria or violates Iraq’s sovereignty through military actions uncoordinated with the Iraqi government.”
He also said that the US opposes the latest attacks on southern Turkey “that have reportedly led to the deaths of multiple civilians.”
He noted that they urge their Syrian partners to not escalate against Turkey as it could “threaten our shared goals, including to continue the fight against ISIS and make sure the terrorist group can never resurge.”
