2 killed, 9 injured in Iranian attack on KRI
ERBIL, KRI, Iraq (North Press) – Iran launched on Monday missile and drone attacks across the border on Kurdish Iranian opposition bases in the governorates of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), killing two and wounding at least nine.
A local source told North Press that Iranian missiles hit a headquarter of the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDP), in the vicinity of the city of Koya, in Erbil.
The New York Times said, citing the deputy head of the KDP that two of its members were killed and at least nine severely were injured.
The local source said that they heard the sound of the airstrikes at around 08:30 am.
This came in tandem with another attack against a base of a major opposition group, Komala, the Iranian Kurdish Communist Party, near Sulaymaniyah, causing no casualties, according to the New York Times.
On late September, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Group Corps (IRGC) launched a fierce attack against posts in several areas in the KRI, especially in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Kirkuk with more than 73 ballistic missiles and drones, killing 13 people and injuring about 50 others, including women and children.
Hours after the attack, UN in Iraq condemned the Iranian attacks, saying that they violate Iraqi sovereignty.
“Iraq should not be used as an arena to settle scores and its territorial integrity must be respected,” the UN tweeted.
“Dialogue between Iraq and Iran over mutual security concerns is the only way forward,” the UN added.
These attacks come in tandem with anger protests and tensions that take place in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini.
On September 16, Kurdish woman Amini died at the hands of country’s morality police while being in their custody, sparking nation-wide protests.
The Iranian attack is the first of its kind since the designation of Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani as a President of New Iraqi Government.
However, a few days ago, a Turkish drone targeted Sinjar district in Nineveh Governorate, northern Iraq.
