Government bombardment on Syria’s Idlib leaves 80 casualties
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – 80 people, most of whom are children and women, were killed and wounded in missile strike carried out by Russian and Syrian government forces on IDP camps in the western countryside of Idlib, northwest Syria, at dawn on Sunday.
Medical sources told North Press that death toll of the missile strike has increased to seven, including two children and a woman, in addition to 75 people, most of whom are women and children who were transported to hospitals and medical points in the cities of Idlib and Maarat Misrin, and Bab al-Hawa Hospital on the border with Turkey, north of Idlib.
The Syrian government forces targeted Maram IDP camp and village of Kafr Jales of Maarat Misrin district in Idlib with more than 30 missiles.
A military source of Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, also known as Syrian National Army (SNA), told North Press that the government and Russian forces launched the strikes from their headquarters near Nayrab Military Heliport, in the city of Aleppo.
The government forces targeted IDP camps near the village of Kafr Jales, west of Idlib, with more than 30 surface-to-surface missiles loaded with cluster bombs at once, according to the source.
In September, Cluster Munition Coalition, affiliated with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines documented that the Syrian government continued to use cluster munitions since 2012 till 2022.
The strike that targeted about 22 camps west of Idlib came in tandem with airstrikes carried out by Russian aircrafts on the outskirts of Idlib and the town of Sheikh Bahr, according to the sources.
However, no casualties were recorded.
This morning, the SNA factions and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) have intensified artillery and missile bombardment on more than 30 posts of the government forces in the countryside of Hama, Aleppo and Idlib, according to the sources.
