DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A father and his son were tortured to death in Saydnaya prison of the Syrian government though they had had their conditions settled two years ago under auspice of Syrian Red Crescent and Russian Reconciliation Center.
Tribes Council of Palmyra and Syrian Desert said in a statement Mo’yad al-Obaid and Abdulaziz al-Obaid “were tortured to death in notorious Saydnaya prison.”
Mo’yad and Abdulaziz hail from the eastern countryside of Homs, according to the statement.
The statement added that the father and his son joined the government settlement on their arrival from al-Rukban camp to the eastern countryside of Homs in 2020.
They left al-Rukban due to deteriorating living conditions.
The tribal statement said that their death was known on October 30.
A relative of al-Obaid family told “The New Arab” news website that the 45-year-old Mo’yad and his 26-year-old son Abdulaziz returned to their birthplace in the town of al-Quaryatayn in the eastern countryside of Homs from al-Rukban in mid-2020 after joining the government settlement like many other families.
The relative added, “The regime security apparatuses arrested Mo’yad and his son two months after their return and took them to an unknown place. Two days ago, the family received the news of their death, but it has not received the bodies.”
Residents of al-Rukban camp, estimating at about 12.000 individuals, have been under bitter siege since 2018 in tandem with banning internationals institutions from reaching it by the government forces under the pretext of insecurity in the camp.
Al-Rukban is situated within the 55-kilometre “de-confliction zone” east of Homas Governorate nearby the Syrian eastern border with Jordan and Iraq.
It was established in 2014 to house IDPs from eastern governorate, Homs and the city of Palmyra who fled battles between several forces and the Islamic State Organization (ISIS).
