Unidentified attack claims life of government soldier in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A soldier of Military Security Branch of the Syrian government forces was killed in an unidentified attack on a military headquarters in a town east of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

A military source of the government forces said, “Four armed men, ridding motorbikes, targeted the Military Security headquarters in center of the town of Abu Kamal on Syrian-Iraqi border with machineguns.” 

The source, who asked to be unnamed, added the attack lasted 15 minutes, killing a soldier, who hails from Tartus.

The attack has been the first of its kind on the aforementioned headquarters since the government regained control over Abu Kamal in 2017, according to the source.

The Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed militias run vast swathes of the Syrian Desert that has recently witnessed several battles between the government forces and Iranian militias on one hand and the Islamic State Organization (ISIS) on the other.

On October, three members of the Syrian government forces and National Defense Forces (NDF) were killed and three others were wounded in a fighting between the two parties in the town of Sabikhan, eastern Deir ez-Zor, over drugs revenues.
