Syria’s northwest undergoes military escalation after two days calm
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Escalation and mutual shelling renewed on Thursday between Syrian government forces and Turkish-backed armed opposition factions in areas of the de-escalation zone, northwest Syria, after two days of calmness.
The opposition-held areas in the southern countryside of Idlib witnessed fierce shelling between the two parties to the conflict.
Meanwhile, areas in the countryside of Hama and Aleppo, northwest Syria, went under intermittent shelling in tandem with flight by Russian warplanes over areas on border strip with Turkey north of Idlib.
The government forces targeted, with more than 50 artillery shells and missiles, the opposition areas in the vicinity of the villages and towns of Shnan, Sarjah, al-Ruweiha, Benin, San, Fatterah, Fleifel, the outskirts of Kansafra and al-Bara in Zawiya Mountain south of Idlib, a military source of the opposition told North Press.
The source added that intermittent shelling hit the villages and towns of Kafr Amma, al-Qasr, Tuqad, al-Wasatah, Kafr Taal , the outskirts of the city of Atarib and the town of Kafr Nouran west of Aleppo.
Villages and towns in Ghab Plain, including Sirmaniyah and Dweir al-Akrad witnessed similar shelling.
Meanwhile, a source in the National Front for Liberation told North Press, “al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations’ Room targeted with heavy artillery outposts of the government forces in Base 46 and Qobtan al-Jabal, west of Aleppo.”
It also struck the government forces in areas in Milaja south of Idlib with heavy machineguns, according to the source.
The areas in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria continue to witness daily exchange of bombardment between the SNA factions and the government forces, despite being part of the ceasefire agreement signed between Russia and Turkey in March 2020, which stipulates a halt of military action in Idlib.
