Schools in Syria’s Idlib close doors for fear of HTS’ privatization
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Many schools in the city of Idlib, northwest Syria, continue to close their doors due ignoring education sector by Salvation Government, civil wing of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front).
North Press cited local sources from Idlib as saying that the oldest and largest schools in the city have closed due to the failure to pay wages of teachers.
The closed schools used to receive about 8.000 students, according to the sources.
Schools closure has grown fears of residents of Idlib that they will be privatized soon since the Salvation Government has adopted this policy in many other schools in the region.
Recently, a lot of public schools in the city have been privatized and invested, the sources added.
They added saying the Salvation Government evades its responsibility in providing wages to teachers and relies on international and humanitarian organizations in supporting the education field.
Works and activities the organizations, in the past three years, have declined to less than 60% due to HTS harassments.
Students and locals in Idlib told North Press previously that the public sector suffers from stark negligence amid attempts to privatize education in the region that perturbs a section of people fearing education could be exclusive to the well- being in the future.
