Russian raids, mutual shelling in Syria’s Northwest

IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Russian warplanes executed on Tuesday air raids targeting areas under the control of Turkish-backed armed Syrian opposition factions, known as Syrian National Army (SNA), in the countryside of Idlib and Hama Governorates.

The Russian raids came amid mutual shelling between the Syrian government forces and the Turkish-backed SNA in the countryside of Hama, Aleppo, and Idlib.

A military source from the opposition told North Press that “Russian warplanes targeted with multiple raids the outskirts of al-Zainiya in  the western countryside of Idlib, and al-Qarqur in Ghab Plain west of Hama; no casualties were reported.”

The raids coincided with a government artillery and rocket shelling targeting the villages and towns of Fatterah, Kafr Oweid, Sfuhen, Kansafra, al-Ruweiha, San, and Benin, as well as the outskirts of al-Bara town in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib.

The towns and villages of al-Hamidiyah, al-Ankawi, Duqmaq, and al-Mansurah in Ghab Plain west of Hama witnessed a fierce shelling by the government forces.

The source said that the government forces also shelled positions in the villages and towns of Kafr Taal, Tuqad, Rehab, Kafr Nouran, al-Wasatah and al-Qasr in the western countryside of Aleppo.

Meanwhile, North Press was informed that al-Fateh al-Mubin Operations Room targeted with heavy artillery the government forces’ positions at base 46 west of Aleppo, and the village of al-Malajah in Zawiya Mountain, south of Idlib.

The areas in the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria continue to witness daily exchange of bombardment between the SNA factions and the government forces, despite being part of the ceasefire agreement signed between Russia and Turkey in March 2020, which stipulates a halt of military action in Idlib.
