2 people killed in different incidents in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Two people were killed on Wednesday in two separate operations in the western and northern countryside of Daraa.

A local source told North Press, “Hassan al-Assoul, nicknamed Abu Rakan, was shot dead by unknown attackers on the road between the towns of Tasil and Ain Thakar, west of Daraa.”

The source said that al-Assoul was the former head of the agricultural association in the town of Saidah in the countryside of Quneitra.

Residents also found the body of Abdurrahman Abdullah al-Hariri, on the Damascus-Daraa highway, near the northern town of Izraa, according to the same source.

“Al-Hariri hails from the town of Buser al-Harir in the eastern countryside of Daraa. He was kidnapped by unknown people in Damascus city 20 days ago,” the source added.

He continued, “Al-Hariri was a former member of the Syrian armed opposition factions; he got his settlement card after the Syrian government forces entered Daraa in 2018, and he did not join any military formation after that.”

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a settlement agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition militants who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed a settlement card and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with assassinations, arrests and thefts taking place on a daily basis, amid the government’s failure to hold it under control.
