Hegemonic countries invest in terrorism – Syria’s FM
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Faisal Mekdad, said in a UN speech on Monday that hegemonic countries had invested in terrorism and “put economies in a stranglehold”, disregarding international law.
In his address to the last day of the UN General Assembly’s annual high-level debate, Mekdad added, “Often, they [hegemonic countries] use the excuse of spreading democracy and human rights but meanwhile states have been destroyed.”
What happened in Syria is an example, as terrorists who are used under the name of ‘moderates’ by some countries are no more than tools used to destroy the countries that Western powers cannot subjugate, according to Mekdad.
“The war on Syria was an attempt by the West to maintain control over the world,” but, those attempts to isolate Syria from the world and break the will of its people have failed, the Minister confirmed.
He pointed out that fighting “terrorism” must be carried out alongside the Syrian government in accordance with international law.
Since 2015, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) supported by the US-led Global Coalition have fought ISIS in large swathes of Syrian territory in light of the absence of the soldiers of the Syrian government forces.
Western “economic terrorism,” cost Syria $107 billion in oil and gas revenues since 2011, the Syrian Minister indicated.
