Government control not protect Syria’s Daraa from insecurity
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – People of Daraa Governorate in southern Syria live in a state of insecurity and chaos although it has been under the control of Syrian government since 2018.
The governorate witnesses almost daily cases of attacks, killing and abduction, the matter leads to casualties among civilians, including children and women.
In addition, members of the Syrian government forces are continually attacked and killed by unknown gunmen.
On September 20, nine people were wounded, including three soldiers of the Syrian government forces, in two separate IED explosions in the western countryside of Daraa.
On September 19, an officer of the government forces was injured due to the explosion of an IED in the eastern countryside of Daraa.
Three soldiers were injured when an IED blew up with a recreational vehicle near the town of al-Yadouda in the western countryside of Daraa.
The soldiers were taken to Daraa National Hospital to receive proper treatment.
The government forces sent reinforcements, including 10 military vehicles, and established a temporary checkpoint in the area.
The same area witnessed another explosion, which injured six people, including children due to targeting a transport car.
An eyewitness told North Press that six people were wounded on the way from Daraa city to the village of Jillen, west of Daraa.
Continued chaos
Despite extensive deployment of military and security checkpoints of the government forces at the entrances and exits of cities and towns of Daraa, those who carry out the killings, leave the villages and enter others through military checkpoints.
A local source told North Press that attackers, who were riding motorcycles, fired directly at two young men near al-Dalafin roundabout south of the town of al-Muzayrib in Daraa western countryside.
As a result, Adnan Izzat al-Beriqi was killed and Samir al-Barhomi was wounded.
Al-Beriqi was a garment trader and a civilian, who had not joint any military or security formations since eruption of the Syrian war in 2011.
Security chaos
All villages and towns of Daraa are subjected to assassinations and killings except for the city of Busra in the eastern countryside of Daraa and some surrounding villages which are controlled by the Eighth Brigade of the Fifth Corps.
On September 18,unidentified gunmen killed two people in separate incidents in Daraa, southern Syria.
Unidentified gunmen, riding a motorcycle, shot Ali Abdul’aziz al-Aweir dead in the town of Dael in the countryside of Daraa.
Al-Aweir was a former member of a Syrian opposition faction before the government forces entered Daraa in 2018.
Al-Aweir was hospitalized to the National Hospital in the town of Tafas in the western countryside of Daraa, where he died, the source added.
In a separate incident, unknown gunmen killed Muhammad al-Masa’id, known as “Abu Qassem al-Badawi”, in a neighborhood of the city of Daraa, a local source told North Press.
Al-Masa’id succumbed to his injuries in the National Hospital in Daraa, the source added.
Al-Masa’id was one of the people accused of working in drug trade and promoting it among youth, according to the source.
Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.
In 2021, Daraa Governorate went through an 80-day-seige.
