Protests erupt in Syria’s Suwayda for second day

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Protests broke out on Tuesday for the second day in a row in the northern countryside of Suwayda, soutern Syria, with dozens of residents blocking a highway and calling for Syrian government to improve the public services in the region.

On Monday, dozens of people blocked the Damascus-Suwayda highway with stones near the village of Hazm, north of Suwayda to proceed with their calls until their demands are met.

Protestors told North Press that they called upon people of other areas to join the protests.

Traffic on the highway was blocked except for emergencies and aid vehicles, according to the source.

Suwayda Governorate suffers from economic woes and lack of public services, most notably the soaring energy prices.

Other protesters, contacted by North Press, said that the government forces and their security branches have not yet taken any action despite the two-day protests.

Since the end of July, Suwayda Governorate has witnessed several protests against the government negligence regarding the living conditions and the suppressive practices of its security authorities.
