Protests break out in Iran over Amini’s death
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iranian security forces in the city of Sanandaj dispersed on Monday protests that came in response for the death of the 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of the police.
On September 16, Mahsa Amini died in Kasra hospital days after being detained by the Iranian police for allegedly not complying with the country’s hijab regulations.
Mahsa Amini was arrested when she was travelling with her family to Tehran. Witnesses reported that Amini was beaten in the police van after her arrest, but the police disputed these accounts and claimed that Amini had suffered a heart attack.
Since Saturday, several Iranian cities have witnessed angry protests due to police’s mistreatment to women.
On Monday, Several universities in Tehran witnessed demonstrations in response to Amini’s death.
Students from the universities of Tehran, Shahid Beheshti, Tarbiat Modares, and Allameh Tabataba’i participated in the protests, and demanded clarification behind the circumstances that led to Amini’s death.
Hundreds of people demonstrated in Sanandaj (Amini’s hometown) to protest her death. The demonstrators began from the Ferdowsi street and ended in Azadi Square in the city. They insisted that Amini died under torture.
Unofficial sources said people of Sanandaj, the capital of Kurdistan Province, launched a general strike.
Iranian opposition media published footage showing clashes between protesters and security forces in the city of Divandarreh in the province.
