Armed attack claims lives of 14 pro-Iranian militants in Syria’s Homs

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, 14 militants of pro-Iranian Liwa al-Quds were killed and five others were wounded in an attack with machineguns that targeted their headquarters in Palmyra Desert east of Homs, a governorate east Syria.

A military source of Liwa al-Quds told North Press unidentified attackers, said to be militants of the Islamic State Organization (ISIS), launched a massive attack with machineguns against the headquarters in Palmyra Desert.

The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for security reasons, added that the attack claimed the lives of 14 militants of Liwa al-Quds, among them were Palestinians and Iraqis, and wounded five others.

The wounded were transferred to Palmyra Military Hospital, according to the source. 

The source went further citing survived militants as saying the attack was launched by scores of armed men, who were shouting ISIS slogans, and they were dressed in the government military outfits for camouflage.

Amid mobilization by the pro-Iranian militias, military reinforcements, including heavy machinery, were brought in with the aim to comb the area after the attackers ran away. 

The Iranian-backed factions along with Syrian government forces control large swathes of the Syrian Desert and east countryside of Deir ez-Zor that witnessed recently battles with ISIS.

Unknown gunmen targeted on September 12 a patrol of Iranian-backed Quds Force, claiming the lives of four militants and injuring four others in Palmyra Desert, east of Homs in eastern Syria.
