Unknown gunmen target Muslim cleric with IED in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, unknown gunmen targeted a car of a Muslim cleric in Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, with an Impoverished Explosive Device (IED) which burned the car completely.

A local source told North Press that unknown gunmen exploded an IED that was planted in the car of Fouad Farouq al-Sallakh in front of his house in the Tariq al-Sadd neighborhood in Daraa al-Balad city.

The car, a Kia Rio model, was reduced to ashes, but no casualties were reported. Al-Sallakh was still inside his house when the car was exploded, according to the source who added that al-Sallakh is not attached to any military or security party. He is a man of religion and the Imam of Hussein Mosque in Tariq al-Sadd neighborhood.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in 2018, the governorate has been living in a state of insecurity, with assassinations, arrests and thefts taking place on a daily basis.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a settlement agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition militants who agreed to hand over their heavy weapons were handed a settlement card and allowed to stay in Daraa, while those opposed the agreement would go to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).
