Government forces release detained persons in Syria’s Daraa

DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Syrian government forces released on Thursday a number of young men several hours after being arrested at one of its posts in Daraa al-Balad region in Daraa Governorate, south Syria.

The young men were arrested against the backdrop of protesting and blocking several roads.

A local source told North Press that members of a post of the Military Police arrested nine military service evaders from Daraa al-Balad.

Dozens of protesters blocked a number of roads and set tires on fire in Daraa al-Balad in protest against the arresting incident, the source added.

The source pointed out that among the detained was, Qussay Jazwan Qetaifan, along with other two companions working in one of the brick factories in Daraa al-Balad area.

The Division Recruitment of the Syrian government in Daraa messaged the young men, last July, to review the division recruitment to serve compulsory service.

Thousands of people from Daraa Governorate refrain from joining military service after the settlement agreement in 2018 due to the lack of confidence in government forces’ promises not to arrest them, and the unspecified length of service, according to residents, whom North Press previously met.

On July 28, an agreement was reached between representatives of the town of Tafas and officers of the government forces. In the agreement, the locals agreed to hand over those unwilling to engage in the 2018 settlement agreement to the government forces and let the forces search in specific houses to find those outlawed. In turn, the deal entailed that all government military personnel must withdraw from the town after finishing the search.

However, the terms of the agreement were not implemented as some of those wanted persons refused to leave, prompting the government to shell the town.

Since the government forces re-captured Daraa in line with the 2018 agreement, the governorate has been living in a state of security chaos, with one or two daily assassinations targeting soldiers and officers of the government forces, not to mention the spread of thefts.
