QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Officially, the Biden Administration notified the Congress of its will to sell Taiwan defense system with 1.1 Billion USDs.
This comes in tandem with Beijing’s increasing military, air and sea presence around the Asiatic island.
This is part of a big bargain following heightened tension between China and Taiwan owing to the visit paid by Nancy Pelosi speaker of the United States House of Representatives to Taipei last month.
The sale package includes 60 Harpoon anti-ship, 100 Sidewinder air-to-air missiles and support for a surveillance radar system.
It is the fifth and largest arms sale to Taiwan advanced by the Biden administration. As no time was set to deliver equipment such sales usually take years to be delivered.
Laura Rosenberger, White House senior director for Taiwan and China, was quoted by The Washington Post as saying the administration has undertaken a “substantial effort” to accelerate the process.
“We’re acutely aware of the need to expedite delivery,“ she said.
The package, which was first reported by Politico, is part of the administration’s broader strategy to deter Beijing’s aggression.
They revealed that the United States will soon launch trade talks with Taiwan.
The Biden administration believes the Chinese threat against Taiwan is a long standing one. Washington plans for an overall and sustainable response.
In August, the US had two joint air trainings with japan close to Okinawa, and sent last week two war-ships via Taiwan Strait to be the first of its kind since the visit paid by Pelosi.
However, the Biden’s administration said it is China that seeks to “Change the de facto reality, with steps that threaten peace and stability via the Taiwan Strait.
