UN official calls for urgent solutions for 2 camps in NE Syria

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press)—  UN Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator for Syria Imran Riza warned on Tuesday that Hawl and Roj camps, northeastern Syria, are really dangerous for children to live in, calling for “urgent solutions.”

In a video posted on his Twitter page, in which he was talking from Roj camp, Riza said that he spoke to many women and children about the difficulty of their lives in the camp.

The UN official said that the women and children in the camp “keep talking about wanting to go home.”

“They feel like they will take their responsibility. They feel like their countries will take their responsibility in order to ensure a future for their children,” he added.

On August 17, Imran Riza toured Hawl and Roj camps and other areas. Soon after, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs issued a statement regarding the situation in the camps and in northeastern Syria.

In the statement, Riza expressed his concern for the recent uptick in violence and murders in Hawl Camp, and the latest spike in the Turkish military escalation – especially drone strikes – in northern Syria which resulted in many civilian casualties.
