Turkish delegation to visit Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A delegation of a Turkish left-wing party and a number of former ministers and veteran diplomats is going to visit Syria and meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Mehr News Agency reported that if the results of the aforementioned visit were positive, presidents of Syria and Turkey “will probably meet on the sidelines of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit (SCO) in Uzbekistan.”

The 2022 annual SCO summit is scheduled to be held on September 15-16 in Samarkand.

“Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that during his trip to Sochi, Putin asked him to participate in the Shanghai meeting, and he would probably participate,” Mehr News Agency said.

In turn, Putin asked al-Assad to attend the meeting.

“If Assad participates in the meeting, a meeting between the presidents of Turkey and Syria will probably be held,” according to the report.

He also revealed that he had held a short meeting with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad in Belgrade in October 2021, adding that communication had resumed between the two countries’ intelligence agencies.

However, residents in cities, towns and villages run by Turkish-backed Syrian opposition factions in northwest Syria witnessed demonstrations, expressing their anger and rejection due to those statements.
