Demonstrations against Turkey’s calls for reconciliation reach NE Syria
TEL TAMR, Syria (North Press) – On Friday, the two Turkish-occupied cities of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) and Tel Abyad witnessed public demonstrations against statements by Turkey’s foreign minister about reconciliations between the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition.
On Thursday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu revealed on sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement meeting in Belgrade that he had held a short meeting with his Syrian counterpart Faisal al-Mekdad in Belgrade in October.
Cavusoglu called for reconciling between the Syrian government and the opposition to fulfill “permanent peace” as he claimed.
Hundreds of settlers and residents of Sere Kaniye and Tel Abyad took to street following Friday prayer and staged demonstrations under title “We will nor reconcile.”
In Sere Kaniye, hundreds gathered at al-Joza roundabout, chanting slogans against the reconciliation, while in Tel Abyad, others gathered nearby Ali Ibn Abi Talib Mosque.
The protesters raised signs with written phrases, rejecting the reconciliation with the government and Turkey’s endeavors for rapprochement.
On Thursday at night, hundreds gathered in Sere Kaniye and Tel Abyad and the town of Soluk, following Cavusoglu’s remarks.
Cavusoglu told reporters that his country intends to normalize ties with the Syrian government and calls for reconciliation between the government and the opposition.
“We need to bring the opposition and regime together for reconciliation somehow, there will be no permanent peace otherwise,” he claimed.
