Turkey shells villages in Syria’s Qamishli

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, Turkish forces bombed several villages in the eastern countryside of the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria. 

Two Turkish mortar shells hit the vicinity of the village of Tel Ziwan, an eyewitness told North Press. 

While eyewitnesses from the village of Kartoub said that two artillery shells landed near the village.

Turkish artillery targeted the villages of Khanika with three artillery shells, Tel Jernek with three shells, and Karamah with one shell in the countryside of the town of Amuda, west of Qamishli, according to eyewitnesses.

Turkey has escalated its attacks on areas in north and northeast Syria, using artillery and drones following Tehran Summit, in which Turkey failed to obtain a green light by Iran and Russia to launch its military operation in north Syria. 

The Turkish forces escalated their bombardment this morning on several villages north of Hasakah and others belonging to the city of Qamishli. They bombed villages in the countryside of Derbasiyah with three shells, and three other shells on the town of Zirgan, according to a statement by the Internal Security Forces in northeastern Syria (Asayish).

Since May 23 Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced plans to carry out a major military cross-border incursion into northern Syria. He specified his targets in the two northern Syrian cities of Manbij and Tel Rifaat.
