Fire claims lives of two children in camp west of Syria’s Hasakah

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Two children lost their lives and five other displaced people were wounded on Saturday due to fire broke out in Washokani camp in the western countryside of Hasakah governorate, northeastern Syria.

Washokani camp was established in 2019 to shelter the IDPs of the city of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) who fled following the so-called Turkish military operation Peace Spring which resulted in the occupation of the city and the displacement of its original inhabitants.

Co-chair of the camp’s council, Hevin Abdo, suggested that the reason behind tents catching fire was due to a short circuit in one of the tents and was shifted to other tents.

Adnan Mahmoud Hussein, 6, and Abdurrazaq Mahmoud Hussein, 5, who are IDPs from Umm al-Khair village, were caught on fire. The fire also burned down another seven tents, according to Abdo.

The Washokani camp contains 2.371 families in total of 6.355 individuals.
